When you’re busy fabricating precision components for clients across the aerospace, government and industrial sectors, it’s easy to overlook energy use, even when you know it should be a top priority.

According to Michael Pio, vice president at LIMA Precision in Feasterville, Pennsylvania, lighting plays an extremely important role in the daily operations of his manufacturing facility. Despite his interest in upgrading the old lighting, the project remained on the back burner for nearly a decade.

“As a small business, we’ve always got a lot going on in here,” Pio said. “When we sit down to discuss the business, lighting just isn’t one of the first things that comes up, unfortunately.”

That is, until a PECO energy advisor visited the facility to explain the utility’s energy efficiency solutions and incentives. PECO Small Business Direct Install Solutions makes the lighting upgrade process easy and hassle-free. “The timing was just right,” Pio said.

LIMA Precision was able to replace more than 40 lighting fixtures inside and outside of its 10,500-square-foot building. Crews replaced the old fluorescent lighting with energy-saving LEDs that make the workspaces brighter and safer. Pio said the project was so successful he was able to make an immediate cut to his operating costs.

“After we designed the layout of our machines, we installed hanging lights directly above them,” Pio said. “With the upgrades, the intensity of the LEDs is so much brighter we were able to remove several hanging fixtures.”

Plus, he said, the new lighting has made the facility more appealing. “Some shops can seem dark and dreary due to inadequate lighting. Our workspace is not only brighter, but also safer.”

Another bright spot for LIMA Precision is that the business is projected to save enough energy to recoup the entire cost of the upgrades in less than two years. Pio is already planning additional energy efficiency projects. He encourages others to take time to consider these valuable upgrades.

“We will be renovating our office area in the future and plan to contact PECO again for help with lighting solutions,” said Pio. “Reducing our energy footprint also helps to benefit the environment. Also, other neighboring businesses have contacted us regarding PECO’s lighting program.”
